Who we are
We are licensed therapists, college professors, and professional speakers.
We are thinkers, feelers, and helpers. We love how our imaginations can take us to great heights, our practicalities can keep us grounded... and that sometimes in the space in-between lies a world of infinite possibilities.
We believe that people are powerful. Author Alice Walker said, "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any." It is our honor to help people tap into, reclaim, and unleash their personal power.

Our Stories
Cynthia Vejar (you can call me Cindy):
Where does a story start? It was an unusually cold day in October when my mother started feeling labor pains and rushed to the hospital to deliver yours truly.
Instead, how about the highlight reel and a few fun facts.
1. I’m a mother, daughter, wife, sister, and friend.
2. I have a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Virginia Tech, am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a licensed School Counselor, and a tenured college professor. I have worked in the field for over 25 years.
3. I love all animals, but if I had to pick my favorites, they would be dogs, elephants, and octopi (or octopuses, to amp up a friendly debate about how to pluralize the names of our intelligent underwater friends).
4. I am curious, empathic, creative, and love to make a difference in the lives of others.
5. I believe teaching and counseling are two-way streets. To be effective, the teacher or counselor must also be willing to learn, and the student or client must also have opportunities to teach.
Catherine Breneman (you can call me Cathy):
My story begins with my earliest memory, when my first brother was a baby, and my mother was taking care of him and said, “Cathy, I need you to come over here and help me”…. "Helper," I thought to myself, brimming with pride and responsibility.
Being a "helper" has since been a part of my identity and incorporated into the roles I assume, the relationships I uphold, and the goals I pursue. I aim to help people navigate their challenges, gain insight, and develop coping strategies and create lives filled with greater meaning and purpose.
Some of my quick glimpses, revelations, and shining moments include:
1. I am an experienced social worker who has practiced in psychiatric, medical, and substance use treatment settings.
2. I earned my Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh and M.S.W. at West Virginia University.
3. I love nature and believe in the healing properties that can be found in our natural environment.
4. Unrelenting hope and a belief that recovery is possible and for everyone guide my connections with people.
The Flipped Script
Our stories and experiences impact how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. At The Flipped Script, we believe those stories can be explored, understood, and, when they are no longer serving us, rewritten. Sometimes looking at things through a new lens and rewriting the stories we tell ourselves can open possibilities for what comes next.
